Road Safety Figures

The road safety figures for 2011 were released by the DFT, with ratification expected in October, as is usual. Predictably a rise has been noted from 1850 to 1901, still good figures but surely a rise with todays technology and education is avoidable? With motorcyclists representing a disproportionate group. Across the EU figures are mixed, yet some Eastern European members are making huge strides with improvement, and vision zero somewhere bubbling under the surface.
Can we make it better? Or were the figures massaged for 2010? The final year of project Tomorrows Roads. With over 30m live licences in the UK, maybe the figures are good, traffic is likely to pick up again as fuel prices fall. STATS 19 can’t record everything, although a good system, with CRASH 19 starting to make an appearance, there are, as noted, some KSI’s that are not recorded due to there being no recording catagory for them.
